What a growing medium does

In hydroponics, a growing medium holds the plant up in its pot or tray. The nutrient solution carries the nutrients.

Names you will see

Stone wool, clay pebbles, coco coir, and perlite are names makers use for growing media. The label says what a product is and how to prepare it.

Net pots

Net pots are open-sided pots that hold the medium and let roots reach the solution.

Handling

Follow each label for handling, preparing, and disposing of a medium.

What we do not say

We do not compare media or say one suits a system. Results vary.

FAQ

We do not say. Follow the label.
No. In hydroponics the medium holds the plant up, and the nutrient solution carries the nutrients.

General information only. Water and electricity are a dangerous mix: keep plugs, cords, and connections away from water and follow every maker's instructions. CPSC says a GFCI "is designed to protect people from severe or fatal electric shocks" and to test every GFCI "At least once a month." Use a qualified electrician for any wiring. Keep nutrients and other chemicals away from children and pets. In an emergency, call 911.
